An article titled, "War Veteran Lives Unknown for 20 Years", spotlighted four elderly Civil War veterans living in the Joliet area and members of the Frederick A. Bartleson G.A.R. post.
   " ...Dr. Alfred Nash, 305 Cass Street, is the last of the quartet.  He is 80 years of age.  The doctor enlisted in December, 1862, as assistant surgeon in the First Michigan cavalry, and later was promoted to chief surgeon of the Ninth Michigan cavalry.  He joined the Bartleson [GAR] post here in 1884, two years after it was organized..."
