John Larking, civil war veteran and attaché of the city schools for many years, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Frank H. Young; 6944 Burnham avenue, Chicago, yesterday afternoon, Jan. 27 at
4 o’clock.  The end was sudden, and was due to the infirmities of age.
The passing of this aged citizen of kindly ways and peace loving disposition was received with some surprise in this city where his face was a familiar one at Christ church and among veterans of the civil war.
To those who were intimately acquainted with Mr. Larking there will come a little quiver, a pull at the heart strings, for he cared so little for the mad race for position that found time to make friends.  He had plenty of them.  His dignity and understanding was such that his presence fitted into the councils of the prominent; his heart was with the masses who toil along the weary ways, travel the long beat between hearthstone and shop.
It is thus that the news was spread about the city that an old friend had slipped away, gone home to report his stewardship.
Arrangements have not yet been completed for the funeral, but it will be in charge of his army comrades of Bartleson Post, acting jointly with the pastor of the local Christ church.
John Larking was born November 19, 1837, at Maidstone, England.  He came to America and enlisted in the army early in the conflict, serving three years and seven months with the 36th Illinois Volunteers.  When the war was nearly over, he married Miss Emily Caroline Harrison at Springfield, Ohio.  The exact date was October 11, 1864.  His wife passed away three years ago.
In addition to the daughter mentioned, there remain Miss Jan Larking, principal of Longfellow school; son, John M., an employee of the H. O. Shepherd Co., Chicago, Mrs. Thom. (Elizabeth H.) Stoll of Milwaukee, and Miss Ethel H. Larking of Joliet.
The funeral will be held from the family residence, 209 Fourth avenue some time Friday, the time to be announced later.
