Michael Calmer, the well-known dry good merchant, died at Silver Cross hospital to-day at 1:15 this afternoon, as a result of diabetic trouble.
Mr. Calmer was taken to the hospital to undergo an operation for a mastoid abscess.  This was successfully performed by Dr. Harry Woodruff, on Monday.
Dr. O. C. Davis was the attending physician.
Mr. Calmer had been a suffered from diabetes from about a year, and this morning was in a diabetic stupor.  The attending physicians used saline solution, but without avail, and he passed away without regaining consciousness.
His death is considered to be due entirely to diabetic causes.
Mr. Calmer, who has been identified with Joliet’s business interest and growth for nearly forty years, was born in Bavarian, Rheinpfalz, Germany, May 1, 1842.  He came to the states when twelve years of age and settled in the eastern part of Will county.  He has been a resident of Joliet thirty-six years.
Mr. Calmer served in the city in a political capacity during one term as treasurer.
Five children survive him.  They are Howard C., junior member of the firm of Calmer & Sons; Harry, who is in business at Seattle, Washington; Arthur of New York city; Erwin, who is attending Yale university, and Mrs. P.A. Newton.
The funeral will probably be held sometime Friday at the residence.
The remains will be laid to rest in Oakwood cemetery.
